Description
This year I have had the pleasure of "hosting" a pair of Sandhill Cranes which waltz in synchronized movement across the lawn, stopping to dig through the grass for seeds, insects or whatever else they can find. Their calls, loud and eerie, harken to the distant past - which given its fossil history seems appropriate. Sandhill cranes have one of the longest fossil histories of any extant bird, with one of the earliest fossils of any bird found (2.5 million years old.)
Their wingspan is impressive at around 6 feet, but I have only seen them fly once. They don't seem to be afraid of autos on our small road, they just gracefully glide to the side of the road and then watch as the auto slows down as the inhabitants gawk.
Sandhill cranes are fairly social birds that usually live in pairs or family groups through the year.
