Description
A sarcophagus is usually a serious sculpture, embodying a noble likeness of the person buried in the tomb in a way that shows only the serious side. The persons who commissioned and carved this sarcophagus in Seville had a rare sense of humor. The nobleman is not stiffly facing upward, hands on his chest, but angled a bit to the side, looking as though he is snoring. His wife, next to him, appears to be rolling her eyes, wondering if she will ever get a good night's sleep ... perhaps!

I wonder what the hole is for? Did any of the others have a hole drilled in the mouth? It's fascinating! Do you remember whose tomb this was? (I know, so many questions!) I love this shot Mary, and love your take on it! Snoring for eternity next to his long suffering wife! : ) l/f!

It was indeed an unusual find. I have no idea if the hole in his mouth actually does anything. It would be fun if snoring sounds came out of it.
