These tiny mushrooms scattered over the wet garden mulch were less than half an inch in diameter. Some of them were open, looking as if they were holding tiny pearls.

Yes, Mary, they are called Bird's Nest Mushrooms,, I just Googled images of them. :D

Just looked them up. They seem to be Crucibulum parvulum as they are whitish and growing so far north.
