Description
From the Flamenco Series: #9
Flamenco is often described as the intersection of Passion and Art. This expressive art form is a combination of song (cante), guitar (toque), percussive handclapping (palmas or jaleo) and dance (baile).
This art form is a mixture of the music of all the many cultures that have played important roles in Andalusia, the most important being the Arabic, Jewish, Gypsy, and Spanish Christian. During the Spanish Inquisition, under the Kingdom of Castille, many of these minorities were persecuted and either left the country, fled to the mountainous regions of Spain or were herded into "gitanerias" or ghettos. It is believed that flamenco developed from this group of persecuted people who lived as outcasts from Spanish society.
El baile flamenco is known for its emotional intensity, proud carriage, expressive use of the arms and rhythmic stamping of the feet. Flamenco is a highly technical dance style requiring years of study with an emphasis on lightning-fast footwork performed with absolute precision.
In this photo, the female dancer is wearing the style of dress worn for the Sevillanas at the annual Feria in Seville. Dancers' costumes often include elaborately ruffled dresses requiring 3 to 5 meters of fabric, intricately patterned shawls and exquisite fans and hair ornaments.
